High up on a hill on the outskirts of Brighton & Hove is a new, wind-powered business park in the area of Woodingdean. It sits right on the edge of the South Downs and is now the new home for BLB Chartered Surveyors & Engineers who have moved here from the North Laine area in the centre of Brighton.
Our brief was to welcome around 100 guests to their new offices – to inhabit and warm what was still a “shell” of a building. We installed a number of CiCi’s inflatable sculptures and her Measuring Room, Joe’s sound installation of local bird song, a Drawing Room that saw the transformation of the Finance Director’s office into an artists studio, and we made a [Time] Table of Ideas for visitors to write their memories on. For this we used the old boardroom table – it symbolised to us the journey of the hundred year-old firm, who have arrived in their new habitat with a history in tow. The Table became the connection between the past and the present, with guests invited to write down memorable moments/stories on the timeline, to mark and celebrate a century or more of activity. Joe toured the entire event with his Listening Ears and recorded short interviews and conversations with the guests.
We invited Amy Smith, a Ceramic Artist from BLANK Studios, to install her lovely work in a downstairs office, transforming the room into a temporary gallery space.
Directors, partners and staff at BLB were very happy with the response to our interactive event; the high turnout and enthusiastic engagement with the artworks and environments meant the evening was a great success. We, in turn, were delighted with the opportunity to inhabit and transform their offices for a day and to encourage an Involuntary Park to grow in the unlikeliest of places.
Novas Scarman have just confirmed that our funding application in support of a brand-new project has been successful! We have teamed up with local primary school, St Peters Infants School to deliver The Mini Deer Club, an after school arts club starting in February 2011. The aim of the project is to help the children investigate their neighbourhood’s history and cultural heritage as they go in search of The Portslade Deer. It’s all part of the The Portslade Project – watch this space for more news over the next months …
Coming up in early November – IP are creating an Involuntary Park for BLB Chartered Surveyors & Engineers in their new offices …
Involuntary Park presents:
Times, Lines and Interludes
An evening of art interaction, installation and play, specially designed to mark BLB’s move into a brand new habitat, and to celebrate 106 years of history, moving into the future …
BLB staff, guests and clients will discover hidden sounds in the Listening Room, sketch what they see in the Life Drawing Room, hear stories from the past and leave a trace at The [Time] Table of Ideas, negotiate their own Parcel of Time in The Measuring Room, and see The Office with entirely new eyes.
Congratulations to fellow Involuntary Park Ranger Johanna! She has been selected from a national call-out to receive mentoring and professional development as part of The Independents Leadership development for artists and practitioners at Battersea Arts Centre, in partnership with the Cultural Leadership Programme. Over the next few months, Johanna will be attending a number of Inspiration days across the UK as well as having the benefit of one-to-one mentoring sessions at BAC.
Involuntary Park are delighted to announce that we have been selected as part of a pool of artists for this prestigious public art programme in and around a proposed new network of cycle routes in Wales. Our proposal was one of 200 submitted nationwide, so we are extremely pleased to have got through to the next stage and look forward to forging partnerships in Wales in 2011.
